In many applications in the natural sciences, the aim is to determine physical quantities or certain properties, but these are not directly accessible. Their impact on other quantities, however, is usually measureable. With the help of data on the impact, conclusions on the actual quantity of interest shall be enabled. The evaluation of these indirect measurements corresponds to a mathematical problem which is referred to as an inverse problem. Since measured data are often corrupted by noise, the stability of a solution technique is of great importance and is guaranteed by using regularization techniques. The various research areas addressed in the group Applied Mathematics in the Natural Sciences can be found under "Research".
